Description
INTRODUCTION One factor driving the decision to do a Ph.D is the consideration that this qualification is needed in order to become an academic. As the doctorate is the highest grade, completing a Ph.D is seen as a substantial investment in human capital (1). Often, starting a research degree marks a transition in the lives of students. For some, it is a transition from recent undergraduate work where learning was structured and directed to a situation where the learning is more selfdirected. For others, starting a research degree may be a return to study after a lengthy break. Some students may already be employed in a university and be switching back from the role of teacher to that of a student. Whatever the situation, the student will need time and help to adjust to the new role.
